#335 Quickly Clear Unwanted Objects from a Worksheet

Every once in awhile I need to copy data from a website or online application into Excel and a have some unwanted objects come along for the ride.

In the screen shot below, you can see an example of this extra “junk”.


Usually these objects are easy to see, but if they’re small, or if there are lots of them, it’s not so easy.

A quick way to see all the objects that are on a worksheet is to use the Selection Pane which you can access via File & Select on the Home tab.

With the Selection Pane open you can see a list of all the objects on the active sheet. From here you can select anything you don’t want and hit the delete key.

A faster way for many objects

If you’d like to select all the objects, instead of selecting them one at a time, you can follow these steps:

  1. From the Home tab, click Find & Select
  2. Click Go To Special
  3. In the Go To Special window, click on Objects, and click OK


Delete the Selected Objects

After you’ve selected one or more objects, you can delete them.

  • On the keyboard, press the Delete key, or
  • On the Ribbon’s Home tab, click Clear, then click Clear All.
